Founded in 1984 as Sierra Cardona Ferrer, the firm, now known as SCF Arquitectos, has been in business for over 40 years. Founding partners, Luis Sierra, AIA (R.I.P), Segundo Cardona, FAIA, and Alberto Ferrer, AIA set the foundations of a successful architectural firm by maintaining a true commitment to the concept of lasting architectural values through innovative design solutions.
In 2007, Carmen Rita Fortuño, AIA, and Clemente González, M. Arch. and IT specialist, became partners complementing the firm’s specialized services in corporate interior design, technology integration and 3D visualization. In addition, SCF’s design team is composed of experienced architects and designers, including Rebecca Riefkohl, AIA and Beatriz Hernández, RA, who in August 2024 became junior partner and senior associate, respectively.
SCF has experienced the evolution of the architecture profession, which requires a holistic approach to design as well as the integration of specialized skills and the constantly changing technologies to maintain a competitive practice. SCF is truly committed to producing high quality design projects where service and client relations serve as the basis for successful project outcomes.
Evidence of this work approach are the numerous awards for design excellence received by the firm, including the Award for Excellence in Design from the Florida Association of the American Institute of Architects, as well as the prestigious Henry Klumb Award, the most important architecture recognition, conferred to Architect Cardona on 1992.
SCF is responsible for the design of some of the most iconic urban landmarks and prominent projects in Puerto Rico, including the world-renowned Coliseo de Puerto Rico, Banco Popular Urban Hub, both in the heart of Hato Rey, Paseo Lineal de Puerta de Tierra, which connects Condado with Old San Juan, as well as the library for the Supreme Court of Puerto Rico, and the Museo de Arte y Diseño de Miramar (MADMI), all recipients of national awards.
In addition to the increasingly significant list of projects completed in Puerto Rico, the firm has completed design projects in the United States, the Netherlands Antilles, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Venezuela, Panama, Argentina, Spain and Egypt.
SCF is a full-service architecture, interior design and planning firm. With experience in nearly all project types, SCF combines outstanding design skills with construction contract administration capabilities. The strength of our professional accomplishments combined with the breadth of our services sets us apart. Our multidisciplinary approach makes it possible for us to play a crucial role in many phases of projects from programming, conceptual design, schematic design, design development, to the preparation the construction documents, including the services of our civil, mechanical, electrical, structural, and fire and life safety consultants. Our services also include the submission of the required documents for obtaining Construction Permits, as well as assistance in the process of requesting a Use Permit. On complex projects, like the Puerto Rico Coliseum, Urban Train Stations, and the LMM International Airport Control Tower, we have successfully collaborated with specialized state-side and international design consultant firms.
