Puerto Rico National Pavillion at Seville World’s Fair
SCF was tasked with designing the first architectural work representing Puerto Rico at a World’s Fair, the Puerto Rico National Pavilion at Seville. The Pavilion is composed of three geometrical forms as representations of Puerto Rico’s historical development: a triangular structure with thick, stone-textured walls, representing the military fortifications of the Spanish colonial past; a pergola clad with white Carrara marble, representing Puerto Rico’s modern political and economic model; and a cylindrical structure of copper and translucent glass, representing Puerto Rico’s future integration into the technological world. The structure rests on a sinuous, stepped platform that simulates Puerto Rico’s geographical nature. At the time, the pavilion was the only architectural work representing Puerto Rico at a World’s Fair stage. Programmatically, the structure includes an information center, a restaurant, a multipurpose hall, the main exhibition hall and support spaces.
