Segundo Cardona, FAIA, is a member of the University of Puerto Rico’s (UPR) School of Architecture first graduating class. He was a professor of design in the UPR (1974-1984) and was principal at Segundo Cardona Architects before co-founding in 1984 Sierra Cardona Ferrer (now SCF Architects) with partners Luis Sierra and Alberto Ferrer.
His work has been recognized for excellence in design by many distinguished national and international awards from institutions such as the International Union of Architects (UIA), the International Association for Sports and Leisure Facilities (IAKS), the American Institute of Architects (AIA), the CAAPPR, and CEMEX, among others. He was awarded the Henry Klumb Award (1984), the highest distinction of the CAAPPR, and was selected to join the College of Fellows of the AIA in 2006. In 2016, he was awarded the Cemex Lifetime Achievement Award, a recognition given for his valuable professional and personal contributions as an architect to society and to the world of construction. Other recent recognitions include the 2017 Public Space Award for the Paseo Puerta de Tierra, received from the International Union of Architects (UIA) at its Congress in Seoul, South Korea.
He has acted as lecturer, visiting professor and juror, as was also president of the CAAPPR. In 2001, Segundo became a member of the Board of Trustees of the University of Puerto Rico and was President of the Board from 2004 to 2007. His design experience in almost every segment of building type and scale is complemented with his successful experience as a real-estate developer.
Recent projects, such as the Paseo Puerta de Tierra and the BPPR Urban Hub, have set new local values in positive urban impact for civic spaces.
