Veterans Administration Hospital

The project consists of a new domiciliary and rehabilitation facility for the US Department of Veterans’ Affairs (VA). The design concept is a modern interpretation of a Spanish colonial open-air courtyard with surrounding galleries, which serves as the main circulation and principal interaction spaces, providing natural lighting and ventilation to interior spaces. Four basic modules define the centralized courtyard: a five-story building that houses administrative spaces, the medical clinic and three floors of patient rooms; two lateral two-story buildings with service and kitchen facilities as well as rehabilitation and therapy rooms; and a one-story structure on axis with the main entry, containing the dining / multi-purpose room that connects the interior courtyard with the exterior healing gardens.
Special consideration was given to the design of the healing gardens, including different areas for contemplation and meditation, horticultural therapy and walking paths. The intent is to encourage group interaction, private conversation or quiet observation of nature, as well as areas for low-impact exercises to promote physical well-being and healing.
