Pontifical Catholic University of Puerto Rico School of Architecture

The Pontifical Catholic University of Puerto Rico intended to adapt and reuse a former department store, built in 1929, and located in Ponce’s Historic District. The main strategy was to open the space and allow the existing concrete structure to play the main role in the overall spatial experience. Interior walls were removed to allow for maximum penetration of sunlight to the interior of the building, while also showcasing the rustic brick wall of the adjacent building. The exterior combines hi-tech curtain walls with the charming character of the historic façade, enhancing the context of the town’s historic center. The school has a capacity of 500 students.
