Hurricane María Memorial
The Hurricane María Memorial, located on Chambers Street, New York City, was created to remember the victims of the 2017 hurricane, which devastated the island of Puerto Rico. The memorial is a spiral-shaped shelter, allusive to both the shape of a hurricane and of a sundial shell, a natural protective cover for tropical organisms. The ascending spiral crowned by an upward rotating star, the dominant symbol of the Puerto Rican flag. The star is supported by five glass walls printed with a variety of contrasting colors by artist Antonio Martorell. The glass panels were painted with the words of Farewell from Welfare Island, a poem by Puerto Rican poet Julia de Burgos.
